This concludes my brief sketch of several high points of Mystery. The positive case for design of the first cell, which was only hinted at in the chapters on thermodynamics and the afterword, was much more thoroughly developed in the two decades since Mystery, primarily by Stephen Meyer. He articulated the all-important role of the empirically observed structure of our world—that informational complexity is habitually and exclusively seen arising from intelligent agents. This concept—the uniform cause-effect structures of our cosmos—provides a key to what is called “the inference to the best explanation,” which leads the investigator to the conclusion of design.
